Known in the Australian Army as a FRED or Field Ration Eating Device, this marvel of design, based on the U.S Army P-38 was first issued in 1943 and is still in use today.It is a combination can opener,bottle opener and rudimentary spoon.To open a can simply engage the notch by the fold out hook with the lip of the can and push the hook forward into the lid.Move the opener back and forth and “bite” your way around the edge until you have opened the can.Above the bottle opener notch there is a small hole enabling the FRED to be attached to a cord or keyring.
